Leather Animalsシリーズ、第一作。

今回モチーフにしたのは、白と黒のツートンカラーが特徴で、絶滅危惧種にも指定されているマレーバク。

「バク」と聞くと、夢を食べる「獏」を思い浮かべる人が多いと思います。
でも実はその獏は中国から伝わった空想上の神獣。
後に実在のバクが知られるようになり、その独特な見た目から伝説の「獏」が当てはめられ、「バク」と呼ばれるようになったと言われています。

今、地球上に生きているバクは5種類だけ。
どの種類も森を主な住処とし、ひっそりと暮らしています。

忙しい日常の中で、ふと目に入ったとき、思わず肩の力が抜けるような、気持ちが少しゆるむような存在になってほしくて、このBAKUを作りました。

イタリア産のシュリンクレザーを、京都のアトリエで一体ずつ手縫いで仕立てています。
同じ型紙で仕立てても、それぞれに異なる表情が生まれます。

The first in the Leather Animals series.

The Malayan tapir — recognized by its striking black-and-white markings, and listed as a vulnerable species.

In Japan, "baku" calls to mind a mythical creature said to devour bad dreams. But that baku was originally a legendary beast from Chinese folklore. When the real tapir became known, its unusual appearance was so striking that people began associating it with the ancient legend — and the name stuck.

Only five species of tapir remain on Earth today, each living quietly deep in the forest.

We made BAKU hoping it might become that kind of presence — something you catch a glimpse of in the middle of a busy day, and feel your shoulders drop just slightly.

Each piece is hand-sewn from Mastrotto shrink leather in our Kyoto atelier.
No two pieces are ever exactly alike.
